During the development of the Dermaglide® microdermabrasion system, concerns arose over the potential health risks associated with the use of aluminum oxide crystals. Aluminum Oxide has been documented to irritate the skin and throat, cause scratchy eyes, allergic reactions, respiratory problems and in some instances produce low-grade fevers. In searching for safe alternatives, we experimented with various possible crystal mediums. After testing more than thirty compounds, results proved the safest and most effective was sodium bicarbonate, more commonly known as “baking soda.” The results were extraordinary, an abrasive that works better than aluminum oxide while adding therapeutic value to the skin. We are the innovators who first developed the use of sodium bicarbonate crystals for microdermabrasion.

Lighter, softer on the skin and less irritating, this natural composite achieves better results than aluminum oxide with none of the harsh side effects. The sodium bicarbonate crystals used in the Dermaglide® systems are alkaline, adding a natural pH balance to the patient’s skin while destroying bacteria on the epidermis.

Since sodium bicarbonate crystals are lighter than aluminum oxide, the same amount of airflow can propel these crystals at a higher rate of speed impacting the skin with greater intensity creating optimum results. This allows for treatment at lower vacuum levels on thinner tissue, such as under the eyes, without traumatizing or stretching the skin with the suction of a high vacuum level.

The Dermaglide® microdermabrasion system uses a mix of gentle abrasion with suction to remove the outer layer of dead skin cells. Specially formulated baking soda crystals are propelled at a high speed across the skin’s surface to efficiently abrade the skin. The vacuum action helps to stimulate microcirculation increasing the blood supply that provides nutrients needed for skin regeneration. It also stimulates formation of new collagen and elastin to improve skin texture and elasticity.

Baking soda crystals are friendly to the skin and to the environment. They easily dissolve when they come into direct contact with moisture. Baking soda crystals do not leave undissolved particles trapped in pores or follicles. Any post-treatment residue easily blends in with body chemistry and tones the skin; therefore a post-treatment wash-off and toner are unnecessary.
There are numerous studies published by various independent Health Journals and the US government about the health hazards associated with long-term exposure to fine aluminum oxide dust. The internet makes it easy for anyone to investigate the risks. Simply type: “Aluminum Health Hazards” into any internet search engine. Credible and unbiased information is widely available for anyone who really wants to know the truth about aluminum exposure risks. Microdermabrasion service providers that continue using aluminum oxide are increasingly finding themselves in an awkward position of having to defend its questionable safety record to an increasingly aware public.

After experiencing the sodium bicarbonate difference, few people will ever go back to aluminum oxide treatments. Sodium bicarbonate is the perfect organic abrasive for the skin!
